For the Cedar Valley College plan (pdf 43kb), the Cedar Valley College Core Curriculum Evaluation Committee has opted to review Intellectual Competencies (IC) and Exemplary Educational Objectives (EEO) extending the assessment over a five year period and using a three-semester sequence for each round of evaluation. During a typical three-semester sequence an Intellectual Competency or Exemplary Educational Objective assessment committee will perform the following activities:
- Semester 1: Develop a detailed schedule for the assessment process, select assessment tools, determine class assignments for assessing an IC or EEO, and establish rubrics.
- Semester 2: Ensure that involved faculty are aware of the assessment plan, including assessment tools, selected class assignments, and rubrics, determine that all selected class assignments are part of the course syllabi, assess students, and collect all required class assignments.
- Semester 3: Use rubrics to evaluate class assignments, identify areas for improvement and areas of excellence, and determine the resources required to ensure improvements occur or excellence is sustained.

Cedar Valley has mapped a detailed plan for assessing Intellectual Competencies and Exemplary Educational Objectives over the 2004-2009 evaluation period. Reading has been identified as the first competency to be assessed, beginning in Fall 2004 and followed in 2005-2006 by the evaluation of Critical Thinking. Assessment of specific Exemplary Educational Objectives will occur within all component areas during each year of the 2004-2009 evaluation period. The Cedar Valley College plan contains detailed information regarding the assessment cycle.
