• What counts as an attempt? Early in each semester or term, the college reports your enrollment to the State of Texas. As a result of that report, the State then sends money to your college to underwrite your education. (That report is sent on what is called the "Certification Date," and the date varies with each course and each semester or term of enrollment. You may wish to see an advisor about the specific date for any specific course or semester or term.) Therefore, if your enrollment has been reported to the State, your enrollment is considered an "attempt." It makes no difference if you later withdraw or what grade you may earn in the course. However, should you drop the course prior to the date the report is generated, the course never appears on your transcript, and that temporary enrollment is not counted as an "attempt." Attempts include courses taken at any of the Dallas County Community Colleges since the Fall 2002 semester.

• Is there an appeal process? No

• What colleges are part of the Dallas County Community College District? Brookhaven College, Cedar Valley College, Eastfield College, El Centro College, Mountain View College, North Lake College, Richland College, Dallas TeleCollege, and Bill Priest Institute are all part of the Dallas County Community College District. Any course taken at any of these institutions counts as an attempt in a student's record.

• Will I be charged the additional tuition if I take the course for the third time at a college outside the Dallas County Community College District? Each institution has developed its own policy to deal with the third or subsequent course attempt.

• Does the additional tuition apply to all coursework I have taken in the Dallas County Community College District? No. All identified credit and Continuing Education/Workforce Training courses taken since Fall 2002 are included in the third or subsequent attempt. • How will I know if I am going to be charged the additional tuition?
  Students registering through eConnect will receive additional tuition information when they register the third or subsequent time for a course or its equivalent.

  Students registering with the assistance of an advisor will receive additional tuition information when they register the third or subsequent time for a course or its equivalent.

• What tuition will I be charged if I take a course (Credit and/or Continuing Education/Workforce Training) three or more times?
  The additional charge for each credit course will be $50 per credit hour in addition to the tuition charged based on your residency status. For instance, a one-credit-hour class for an in-district student will cost $41 + $50 for a third or more attempt for a total of $91. A three-credit-hour class for an out-of-state student will cost $363 + $150 for a third or more attempt for a total of $513.

Continuing Education/Workforce Training Tuition
The additional charge for continuing education classes will depend on the number of hours the class meets based on $3 per contact hour or $30 per CEU (10 hours of instruction = 1 CEU). For instance, for an eight-hour class normally costing $75, an additional charge of $24 for the third or more attempt would apply, raising the total tuition to $99.

• If I pay out-of-district, out-of-state or out-of-country tuition is the rate higher for me? No. All students, regardless of residency, will pay $50 per credit hour or $30 per CEU.

• Do transferred courses taken from colleges outside the Dallas County Community College District count in the number of attempts? No, only identified credit and Continuing Education/Workforce Training courses taken since Fall 2002 within the DCCCD count towards the third or subsequent attempt.

• If I have a tuition waiver, will I still be charged the additional tuition if I enroll in a course or its equivalent for the third or subsequent time? The following types of waivers will waive the additional tuition for a third or more attempt:

  Certified Educational Aide Children of Nurse Preceptors   Children of Nursing Faculty Deaf/blind Dependent of a Disabled Fireman or Police Officer Dependent of a POW/MIA Early High School Graduate Firefighter Foster Care Hazelwood Hazelwood Dependent

  All other waiver types for which tuition or parts thereof would normally be waived do not apply to the additional tuition for third or more attempts.

• Will my financial aid pay for the additional tuition? The additional tuition charges can be paid with your financial aid awards if there is enough remaining money from your awards after the base tuition and all other institutional charges have been paid. Please keep in mind that Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards limit the number of hours you may attempt before losing eligibility to receive financial aid.

• Will I receive a refund on the additional tuition if I withdraw during the refund timeframe? Yes. The additional tuition will be refunded on the same refund schedule as the base tuition.
  Credit
  For Fall and Spring semesters, the refund policy is 100 percent prior to the first class day of the term, 70 percent for the first 15 days of the term, 25 percent for the 16th through 20th days of the term, and none after the 20th day. Summer semesters and flex classes have a refund policy based on the length of the semester or class.
  Continuing Education/Workforce Training
  100 percent is refunded if the course is dropped prior to the day of the first class meeting, 80 percent is refunded if dropped by close of business on the day of the second class meeting, and no refund is given for drops thereafter.

• May I use the installment payment plan to pay the additional tuition? Yes, if the class is for credit. The additional tuition will be included in the installment payment plan automatically for pay plans initiated and classes added before close of business on the Friday of the first week of the term. Continuing Education/Workforce Training class tuition is never included in installment payment plans.

• Are all colleges charging additional tuition on the third or more attempt of a course or its equivalent? Each public higher education institution in Texas has created its own policy for the third or more attempt on a course or its equivalent. Some colleges may not allow students to attempt a course three or more times.

• I've taken a course two times. May I take credit-by-exam for that course and not be charged the additional tuition? Yes.
