ESL Teaching Academy at Eastfield College

Hands-on Training in Adult Education ESL Teaching

Learn methods and techniques that really work, while enhancing your ESL presentation skills and knowledge.  Whether you are a volunteer, an experienced instructor or new to English as a Second Language (ESL), our quick, affordable1 training will provide you with the tools you need to teach more confidently and effectively.  The ESL Teaching Academy training coursework can be a helpful resource to prepare for the ExCET/TExES2 exam, the classes are approved as Continuing Professional Education hours toward Standard Certificate renewal3, and students can build a transcript with a record of earned CEUs, which are recognized across the United States.  Involvement in the ESL Teaching Academy can be a first important step in discovering the local/national/international network of ESL professionals.   

Previous ESL teaching experience is not required.  As minimum requirements for participating in the program, interested students must hold a high school diploma, GED or equivalent, and have advanced-level English language proficiency.

SKILLS AWARD COURSEWORK: This is the third and final step in the three-part program for the ESL Teaching Academy. An ESL Instructor Skills Award certificate is conferred to teachers who complete the six core courses, the two electives and the practicum and observation. At this time, the form to request the Skills Award certificate must be filled out with the program advisor.

Testing and Syllabi: Essential Nuts and Bolts in ESL

Course Description: ESL teachers need to be able to determine reasonable objectives for their students, and evaluate student progress on a daily basis. This course first covers considerations involved in designing a basic ESL class syllabus, (the teacher's tool to share important course-related details and expectations) and then focuses on appropriate assessment methods and strategies.


Observation and Teaching Practicum
Course Number: EDTC 1092 (Schedule TBA)

Course Description: This practicum is designed to be taken as the last step toward obtaining the ESL Instructor Skills Award. The observation portion enables students to view actual ESL classes varied levels of ESL instruction in order to evaluate the pedagogy based on topics covered in ESL Teaching Academy coursework. After the observation period, the student will have the opportunity to put theory, methods and techniques to practice with the aid of an experienced teacher's support. The observation and teaching portions consist of 8 to 10 hours each. Students will meet with an advisor and classroom instructors as the practicum progresses for direction, feedback evaluation.
