Brookhaven College’s Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program is a 16-month accelerated program with a 72-credit-hour block curriculum. Students attend the program in 16 consecutive months, including summers. Successful completion of the program leads to an Associate in Applied Sciences degree.
After completion of prerequisite courses and admission to the ADN program, courses are completed in four 16-week academic semesters. Students need to plan two to three hours of studying and preparation time for each hour of class and clinical experience. The demands of the nursing program are such that students may not be able to work full-time while enrolled in these courses.
Note: Support courses completed at colleges and universities outside DCCCD must be approved for transfer credit prior to the semester in which the course is required as stipulated in the curriculum outline.
Accreditation
The Texas Board of Nursing unanimously approved Brookhaven College’s application for full accreditation of an associate degree nursing program. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Community and Technical Colleges Division has also approved the program. The Brookhaven nursing program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).
Brookhaven’s Associate Degree Nursing program also recently received full accreditation from the National League for Nursing (NLN).
How to Get Started
Admission to the Associate Degree Nursing program is by a competitive selection process based on a mathematical formula to compute the applicant’s score.

Application and Admission
The Associate Degree Nursing program admits students in both the fall and spring semesters at Brookhaven College and its extension campus at Mountain View College.
The application deadline is each February for the program beginning the following fall semester (August) and each September for the class that begins in the spring semester (January). Check dates on the admissions timeline.
Students accepted into Brookhaven’s or Mountain View’s Nursing program are required by the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council member facilities to undergo a criminal background check and drug testing prior to beginning their clinical experience.
This procedure is conducted after a student has been accepted to the Nursing program. Results of these screenings are forwarded to the Nursing Department of the college’s Health and Human Services Division for review and verification that a student is eligible to participate in a clinical rotation.

We Want Our Students to Succeed!
Our retention rate of keeping nursing students in this competitive and challenging program is more than 92 percent, much higher than other programs of its kind. This is directly related to the program’s philosophy and efforts to help students succeed at every point, says Juanita Zapata Flint, executive dean of Brookhaven College’s Health and Human Services Division.
“We are here to help you achieve your goal, and we will do whatever it takes, but you must do your part,” says Ms. Flint.
Another tool to increase new students’ transition into the program is “Success Camp,” held the week before classes begin the first semester. Sessions include critical thinking, time-management and other skills crucial to success in the program, as well as a time to bond with fellow students and instructors.
Clinical Rotations
To increase students’ preparation for the workplace as a registered nurse (RN), Brookhaven’s ADN program maintains a high one-to-four ratio of class time to clinical time (one hour of class for every four hours of clinical rotation), compared to similar programs’ one-to-three ratio.
Pass Rate on the NCLEX State Licensing Exam
Since the Associate Degree Nursing program opened in 2004 at Brookhaven College, we have had a 100 percent pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX) state licensing exam, which has been commended by the Board of Nursing Examiners (BNE), now the Texas Board of Nursing.
Tuition
Dallas County residents pay $123 per three-hour class – that’s $41 per credit hour, or less than $500 for a full semester load of 12 credit hours.
Compare that to what you’d pay elsewhere! See DCCCD tuition rates for tuition according to your place of residency.

Transferring From DCCCD
Degrees and certificates in our Nursing programs are designed for direct entry into the workforce. However, if you are interested in earning a degree at a four-year institution, please visit the Transfer Services Web site for guidance on the transfer process.
DCCCD has signed a concurrent enrollment agreement with the University of North Texas System Center in Dallas. This enables DCCCD students who meet the UNT admission requirements or complete the Associate in Applied Sciences degree to be automatically admitted to the University of North Texas.
A student may apply for concurrent admission status at the time of first enrollment in DCCCD courses or at any later time during DCCCD enrollment by completing a UNT concurrent admissions application. For more information, call DCCCD Transfer Services at 214-860-2185 or contact the UNT System Center at 972-780-3635.
