Logistics Coordinator
Verizon Business
“I became interested in this program when my job title changed. I am a very determined person, and the Logistics Technology program gave me an opportunity to advance my education as well as my career. I haven’t been promoted to a new position yet, but it has given me a lot of recognition from my manager all the way to my director. I take what I learn from the classroom to work, and it has been beneficial to my department.
“The best part of my DCCCD experience would have to be Professor Ruben Johnson’s classes. Mr. Johnson speaks to us as if we are managing an entire warehouse and encourages us to excel in our careers. He told us to take what we learn from his class and implement it at work. I did just that, and it earned me an award.”
Tira’s manager describes her accomplishments in the 2006 Ovation Award: “Tira has the responsibility of managing thousands of pieces of equipment shipped and received at the NTS North Texas Field Dispatch Depot. Not only does she manage the field failure process for her department, but she is also responsible for accurately maintaining slightly over a million dollars’ worth of spare inventory. She ships, orders and receives parts related to ERs, and orders all the consumables for her department along with helping other managers with their orders. This is a job that often goes unnoticed because it is behind the scenes. However, Tira’s continued success in her position has a direct effect on the success of her entire team. A recent report showed Tira is doing such an outstanding job that she has zero delinquent field failures — an accomplishment considering the number of field failures she processes in a month. She has also taken the initiative to identify and communicate two cost-saving measures having to do with shipping CPE.”
“The most important thing I learned is that although your work and education can get hard and frustrating, don’t give up,” says Tira. “The professors are wonderful, understanding individuals. Everything you learn in these classes can be used in the workforce. This program will help anyone who is looking to increase their knowledge in logistics.”
In her current position, Tira ships, stores and receives all shipments for Verizon’s local operations, maintains critical spares and the warehouse with an inventory value of $1 million, and purchases consumables for all of the company’s North Texas local field operations. She is one class away from earning her associate degree in Logistics Technology at North Lake College.
