Course Structure and Length

Our state-licensed academy offers Basic Peace Officer courses in two options with varying class times and lengths:

  • Full-time daytime classes: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., completed in about six months
  • Part-time evening and weekend classes: Monday through Friday, 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., and Sunday, 8 a.m. to noon, completed in about 11 months

All course material is in accordance with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (TCLEOSE). TCLEOSE requires 618 hours of basic peace officer instruction on specified topics. Our Law Enforcement Academy requires 640 hours.

Our academy is very discipline-oriented, stressing not only the academic knowledge required to pass the TCLEOSE licensing exam but also the attitudes, demeanor, ethics and values required to excel as a professional peace officer.

Costs and Materials

  • The cost of the course is $1,200, paid out in four installments of $300 each.
  • Uniforms are approximately $150.
  • During the first week of the academy, cadets will need to purchase books, at an approximate cost of $250.
  • Throughout the academy, cadets will need to purchase additional equipment including handcuffs, collapsible baton and duty belt gear.
  • During the last phase of the academy, cadets will need to purchase ammunition (approximately $300 and $60 range fees).
  • Weapons are provided by the academy.

TCLEOSE Peace Officer Licensing Examination

Upon completion of the academy, cadets will be presented with a certificate of eligibility to take the TCLEOSE peace officer licensing examination. The examination will be given at Cedar Valley College and will cost cadets $40.

Earning College Credit

Cedar Valley College’s Law Enforcement Academy is administered through its Continuing Education Division, and courses credits are awarded in continuing education units (CEUs).

However, upon completion of basic peace officer training, you may apply to have your CEUs converted into 30 hours of college credit (approximately one year of college) through Excelsior College of Albany, N.Y.

Specialty Courses

A number of specialty courses are offered, including the Basic Peace Officer Course for Firefighters on C-Shift. Please contact the Continuing Education division or check the current semester schedule for specifics.
