EMS Clinical Coordinator
Karen McCarthy earned basic EMT status in 1988 while working toward her associate degree in the paramedic program at the University of Louisiana. While in Louisiana, she worked for Acadian Ambulance and Air Med Services and became an EMT-paramedic after completing her degree in 1991. She moved to Texas in 1996 and began working for Careflite, as well as teaching various EMS-related courses with Metrocrest Medical Services.
Ms. McCarthy earned firefighter certification in 1997 and worked with the Addison Fire Department as a firefighter/paramedic from 1998 to 2003. She also earned a second associate degree in nursing at Brookhaven College and continued to teach with Metrocrest Medical Services. She joined the Brookhaven team when Metrocrest Medical Services’ EMS program became part of Brookhaven College.
An emergency room nurse, Ms. McCarthy currently works in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Medical City of Dallas. She became Brookhaven’s EMS clinical coordinator in February 2007 and maintains licenses in both nursing and paramedicine. She is an American Heart Association-certified instructor in BCLS, ACLS and PALS.
