EMS Program Director and Faculty
EMS Program Coordinator for the Texas Department of State Health Services
Alex Stadthagen, who serves as Brookhaven’s EMS program director, holds an associate degree in EMS as well as a Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) paramedic license and EMS program coordinator certifications.
He started his career as a firefighter and paramedic in 1982 in the Springdale, Ark., Fire Department. He has held positions as a flight paramedic with St. Michael’s AirLife and CareFlite of Fort Worth. He continues to hold a position as a firefighter/paramedic with the Irving Fire Department, which brings a “street-level application” current approach to the program.
He has been a lecturer at the Texas State EMS conference for several years and maintains current registry as a paramedic with the National Registry of EMTs. He also maintains certifications as an advanced firefighter and hazardous material technician with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection Personnel Standards and Education; American Heart Association BCLS, ACLS and PALS associate faculty; American Academy of Pediatricians PEPP course coordinator and NRP instructor; and National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians PHTLS and AMLS course coordinator.
He joined Brookhaven’s faculty in January 2000 to form the college’s new EMS program; its first paramedic class was accepted that month. The college’s EMS program has since conducted 17 paramedic and 40 EMT-basic classes. The program’s students continue to achieve a 10 percent higher first-pass rate on the NREMT cognitive evaluation as compared to the state of Texas as a whole.
