Adjunct Faculty

Richard McLure has served on Cedar Valley’s faculty since 1999, teaching Improvisation, Foundation of Music, Guitar Ensemble and Applied Guitar. His experience also includes teaching applied guitar at Mountain View College, a beginning guitar class at Brookhaven College and private lessons for more than 20 years. He joined the faculty of the University of North Texas’ (UNT) Division of Jazz Studies as an adjunct professor of applied guitar in 2004.

Mr. McLure holds a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern Oklahoma State University and a master’s degree in jazz studies from the University of North Texas. He has privately studied with Dan Haerle (improvisation, UNT); Fred Hamilton (applied jazz guitar, UNT); Tom Johnson (applied classical guitar, UNT); Dr. James Greeson (applied guitar, University of Arkansas); Graig Owens (applied guitar, Wichita State University); and Joe Davis (improvisation, Northeastern Oklahoma State University).

His recording history includes modern jazz titles such as Drew Phelps’ “Round to It” (2000) and William Foley’s “William Foley Quartet” (2006); recordings with baritone saxophone player Chad Makela; and contemporary guitar for “Welcome” (Park Cities Baptist Church, 2005) and “Themes of Our Praise” (Fellowship of Joy, 2006).

He has extensive experience playing session recordings. Mr. McLure was a member of the Drew Phelps Group, with whom he has performed at the Sammons Center, the Denton Jazz Festival and regularly at Dallas jazz clubs Terilli’s and Sambuca. In 2001, he joined the award-winning eclectic jazz sextet Café Noir, which has performed at the University of Texas, a Dallas concert series, the Cleveland Museum of Art concert series, a live radio performance and interview on KERA’s Glen Mitchell Show and in other venues in the Dallas area.

He formed the modern jazz Richard McLure Trio, also featuring Dennis Durick and Carl Hillman, performing regularly at the Winedale Tavern and The Elbow Room.  He makes frequent appearances with Flamenco Fusion, playing nylon string acoustic guitar in the nuevo flamenco style, and plays regularly with the well-known modern jazz Wayne Delano Quartet in Dallas.
