A certified bilingual teacher, Johnny Castro earned master's and bachelor's degrees from Texas Tech University. After completing his studies there, he served as an infant and toddler teacher for the university’s lab school and served as a teacher coordinator and preschool teacher for the Texas Migrant Head Start program. He has also taught in the Irving ISD as a bilingual kindergarten teacher.

A member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAYEC), he has served on various committees and as an officer for the South Plains Association for the Education of Young Children. He conducts training sessions for Head Start of Greater Dallas, Child Care Group, Inc. and other programs.
