Career Outlook: Automotive Technician
According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), formal automotive technician training is the best preparation for these challenging, technology-based jobs:
“Opportunities should be very good for automotive service technicians and mechanics with diagnostic and problem-solving skills, knowledge of electronics and mathematics, and mechanical aptitude. ... Most training authorities strongly recommend that [people] seeking automotive service technician and mechanic jobs complete a training program in high school, or in a postsecondary vocational school or community college”
Automotive technicians continue to be in demand in an occupation that cannot be outsourced. Salaries can range from around $25,000 annually at entry level up to $80,000, depending on the individual and job location.
America’s Career Infonet reported
- median annual salaries in Texas of $30,200 in 2004
- statewide industry growth projected to grow about 18 percent per year over the next decade, slightly above the national average growth rate

The majority of automotive technicians work in automotive repair in maintenance shops, automobile dealers, and retailers and wholesalers of automotive parts, accessories and supplies. Other employment may be available in gas stations; home and auto supply stores; automotive equipment rental and leasing companies; federal, state and local governments; and other organizations.
More than 16 percent of service technicians are self-employed, more than twice the proportion for all installation, maintenance and repair occupations. Most people who enter the occupation can expect steady work, even through downturns in the economy.
