If possible, you should begin planning your transfer about one year before you intend to start attending classes at a four-year college or university. Here is a basic timeline designed to give you an overview of the steps you will need to take at each stage in the process.

June – October

• Research schools.
• Research scholarships.
• Write a general personal essay/statement of academic and career goals.
• Write your resume.
• Build your budget. Start estimating your expenses at the new school and how you will pay for them.
• Ask for letters of recommendation.
• Make a first visit to the schools that interest you. Take a tour and gather basic information.

November – February

• Apply for scholarships.
• Ask for letters of recommendation.
• Request official transcripts from all colleges you have attended.
• Apply to your top three choices.
• Make a second visit to schools. Visit financial aid and scholarship offices, and meet with an academic advisor.
• Do your taxes and apply for financial aid.
• Review your budget and determine how much money you will need to save.

March – June

• Watch your mail for admission and scholarship notification letters.
• Make a third visit to schools.
• Decide which school you will attend and notify that institution.
• Review your budget and revise it if needed.
• Get confirmation of admission, housing, scholarships, financial aid, etc.

June – August

• Work, save money and get ready.
• Attend orientation at your new school.
• Register for fall classes.
• Pay for tuition and housing for the first semester.
• Start work on campus or start applying for it
• Find your apartment and roommates if you will live off-campus.
