How to Get Started

To get started in the Child Development program, complete the admissions process at the college that offers the degree or certificate you’d like to earn. Eastfield and Brookhaven colleges both offer programs in Child Development.

When you meet with an academic advisor, mention your interest in the Child Development program to determine which courses you should take.

The Associate of Arts in Teaching (A.A.T.) degree may be completed at any of our seven colleges. See the Degrees and Certificates page for more information.

Special Requirements

There are no special requirements to enter the Child Development program, except for DCCCD’s requirements for the Texas Success Initiative where applicable for the Associate of Arts in Teaching (A.A.T.) or Associate in Applied Sciences (A.A.S.) degrees.

Tuition

Dallas County residents pay $135 per three-hour class — that’s $45 per credit hour, or less than $550 for a full semester load of 12 credit hours.

Compare that to what you’d pay elsewhere! See DCCCD tuition rates for tuition according to your place of residency.

Rising Star Program

If you are a Dallas County high school graduating senior, you may qualify for Rising Star funds to help pay for this program. The Rising Star program offers academic support services and up to $4,000 for tuition and books, if you have established financial need.

Other Degree and Certificate Options

Dallas County Community College District offers nearly 350 career and technical degrees and certificates, plus more than 50 academic degrees. For more information, see a chart of our degree plans by location or visit our credit programs home page.

Accreditation

All seven DCCCD colleges are individually accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Why is accreditation important? Being accredited means that a college has met certain standards of quality set by an independent accrediting agency. Attending an accredited institution is the best way to ensure your degree (and all the hard work that went into it) will be recognized by other colleges and universities when you transfer and by future employers. Federal financial aid is only available to students of accredited colleges and universities.

Eastfield’s on-site Children’s Lab School in its Center for Child and Family Studies is fully accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Child Development degrees, certificates and awards require cooperative education, practicums and internships that can be done at the student’s work site or in our lab facilities.

Our Child Development faculty not only have advanced degrees; they also have real-world experience working with children, teachers and administrators in a variety of settings.

Our faculty work closely with you all through your study program, helping you to relate your education to the challenges you face or will encounter in a child-oriented workplace. See profiles of some of our faculty.
