What Does a Respiratory Care Practitioner Do?

Respiratory care practitioners specialize in helping to treat people who have breathing problems or diseases and work in almost every area of health care, performing complex patient care procedures for all age levels.

They specialize in the management, treatment, evaluation and rehabilitation of people who have breathing problems and may have diseases such as asthma, emphysema, coronary heart disease and more.

Career Opportunities

Job opportunities are expected to be very good, especially for therapists with skills in cardiopulmonary care or working with infants. More than 80 percent of respiratory care practitioners work in hospitals, but many also work in:

  • offices of doctors and other health care practitioners
  • clinics, both inpatient and outpatient
  • home health care
  • health maintenance organizations
  • rental firms for medical products
  • skilled nursing facilities

Respiratory Care Program Associate in Applied Sciences degree. This degree can be completed in five semesters by a full-time student, but may take longer if you are also working.
