If you’ve got the inclination to draw, design, problem-solve and just plain figure it out, you need to check out a career in computer aided design and drafting!

Computer aided design (CAD) is used in product, architectural, graphic and engineering design, and in industries as varied as aerospace engineering, landscape architecture and jewelry design. The need has never been greater for employees with computer aided design skills. CAD helps designers prepare drawings, specifications, parts lists and other design-related elements using special graphics- and calculations-intensive computer programs.

When you train for a career in this constantly changing field, you learn to prepare technical drawings and plans used by production and construction workers to build everything from manufactured products — such as toys, toasters, industrial machinery and spacecraft — to structures such as houses, office buildings and oil and gas pipelines. The computer drawings provide visual guidelines, show the technical details of the products and structures, and specify dimensions, materials and procedures.

“CAD” originally stood for computer aided drafting, since in its early days it merely automated the manual drafting process. Now, CAD usually means computer aided design since most software includes 3-D modeling and computer-simulated operation of the model. “CADD” incorporates both: computer aided design and drafting.

CADD/CAD Degree and Certificate Options

Because so many of our technical programs are interrelated both in curriculum and skills sets, please review program and course descriptions carefully to see in where your interests and career goals will be best served. It is critical that you review your study plan with an academic advisor, who can help you plot a degree plan that will align with your goals, whether it’s to go straight to work or transfer to a four-year university.

Computer Aided Design and Drafting

The Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) program is offered at two DCCCD colleges:

The CADD program includes:

  • Computer Aided Design and Drafting - Associate in Applied Sciences Degree
  • Architectural Drafting Certificate, a three-semester program preparing students to become certified as entry-level CADD operators specializing in architectural drafting and design. Skills include proficient use of AutoCAD software in creating drawings to architectural specification and identifying construction methods and materials used in building design.
  • Computer Aided Design Operator Certificate, a two-semester certificate program that prepares students to become certified as workforce-ready CADD operators at entry level, using 2D and 3D CADD drawings in AutoCAD software.  
  • Computer Aided Design Advanced Operator Certificate, a two-semester program preparing students to become certified as advanced CADD operators ready to enter the work force. Skills include  customizing the AutoCAD program with additional training in solid modeling and specific areas of CADD.
  • CAD/CAM-CNC Certificate, a two-semester certificate developed to provide skills for entry-level CADD positions as well as skills needed in the machining industry and the manufacturing specialists who require training necessary for the integration of CAD and the CNC machines. Students will learn the basics of CADD, how to set up and operate machinery such as mills and lathes, and will also be trained in the programming of CNC.

A new two-semester certificate, Computer-Aided Drafting Civil/Piping, is in the approval process to be offered beginning in Fall 2012 at Eastfield and Mountain View Colleges.
