What Is Financial Aid Verification?

To ensure that financial aid funds only go to qualified applicants, the federal government is randomly selecting students for a process called verification. Approximately one-third of all financial aid applicants will be required to participate in the verification process. If you are selected for verification, DCCCD is required to collect tax documents from you.

How Will I Know If I Am Selected for Verification?

There are two ways.

  1. You will receive an email from FAFSA that includes your Student Aid Report. The report will indicate whether or not you are selected for verification.
  2. DCCCD will also send you an email with the subject line “More financial aid information needed.”

If you have not received one of these emails, you have not been selected for verification and do not need to proceed through the steps below.

Follow these steps to complete the financial aid verification process.

  1. Click on the Personal URL (PURL) in the email you received from DCCCD. (The email will be sent to the email address you listed on your FAFSA.)
  2. Verify your identity by entering your personal information.
  3. Confirm that your personal information is correct, and fill in any blank fields where necessary. Note: Some fields may be auto-filled based on what you listed on your FAFSA.
  4. If you wish to receive notification emails at an email address different from the one you listed on your FAFSA, enter it in the “Notification Email” field. Otherwise, leave it blank, and you will receive additional notifications at the email address listed on your FAFSA.
  5. Create a user name and password. Note: Passwords must be a minimum of six characters and must include at least one number or special character, such as $, ! or &.
  6. Select three security questions you can easily remember and enter in the answers.
  7. If you are a dependent student selected for verification, the Parent Information Box will appear. Enter in the information requested, and click “Next” to continue.

Congratulations! You have now verified your identity, and you can move on to uploading (or faxing) your documents.
