Alvin Samples

Program Coordinator

El Centro College’s coordinator for the Fire Protection Technology program, Alvin Samples served from 1973 to 2002 with Dallas Fire-Rescue in various positions that included fire and rescue officer, second driver, driver engineer, EMT, paramedic, lieutenant and training officer and as an advanced instructor for the department. He was hired in spring 2010 to serve as coordinator of El Centro’s new Fire Protection Technology program, first offering classes in Fall 2010.
 
A graduate of John F. Kennedy Learning Center in Dallas, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1971 on the USS Chikaskia AO-54 as a boiler technician, reaching the rank of E-5. His duties consisted of supervising his division, training subordinates, maintaining and operating equipment and producing the proper amount of super-heated steam to maneuver the vessel.

He holds an Associate of Arts and Science degree from DCCCD’s Mountain View College, as well as an advanced instructors’ certification with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, earned through Texas A&M University system’s Engineering Extension Service.

He holds certifications from the Illinois Fire Service Institute of the University of Illinois, the Texas Forest Service, the Fire Department Safety Officers Association, the National Fire Academy, the Texas Association of Fire Educators and Swede Survival System Inc.

For 11 years, he trained recruits to become state-certified firefighters at Dallas Fire-Rescue’s Training Academy through a curriculum established by the department with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. He has also taught continuing education classes to station personnel.

Awards include special recognition from Dallas Fire-Rescue and the Dallas Black Fire Fighters Association, of which he is a member, and in A Celebration of Black Men by Dallas Park and Recreation. He has made presentations for career days at local schools.
