Johan Sarkinen’s professional background includes starting and managing small businesses, both in the U.S. and internationally in Europe and the South Pacific. His experience also includes operations within large international companies, business development, software development, project management, product management and information technology.
Starting with computers in the 1970s (an IBM 5110), he has worked with systems development on all levels from embedded systems to mainframes. He has been a heavy user of *nix HP-UX and Linux since the early 1990s and loves the command line interface (CLI) and open source movement.
Originally from Sweden, Mr. Sarkinen moved to the U.S. in the 1990s as product manager for telecom monitoring solutions for markets in North and Central America.
He has a hands-on approach with strengths in information technology, research and analysis, as well as creating business plans and go-to-market strategies, with a track record of successful startups and obtaining venture capital to turn inventive technological ideas into products and business opportunities. He has also led international efforts in product development, strategies and standardization efforts, and has authored and presented papers at conferences in Europe and the U.S. Information security has continually been an integral part of his professional accomplishments.
Mr. Sarkinen holds a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Luleå, Sweden, and has done Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) course work at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), as well as executive continued education in product management from the School of Business at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and course work at Richland College. He’s a perpetual student who has also been working as an instructor since the early 1980s, teaching use of personal computers before the era of Windows and Macs.
He is a project management professional (PMP) certified by the Project Management Institute (PMI), a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a proud member of the U.S. FBI’s InfraGard program.
