Newsbrief

(DALLAS) — Members of the Dallas County Community College District board of trustees unanimously approved a proclamation during their regular April meeting that honored state Rep. Roberto Alonzo for his work on behalf of higher education and DCCCD. Alonzo, who attended the meeting and accepted the honor, thanked board members and the district for their support and reminded the audience that higher education is the key to the future for all Texans.

Jerry Prater, chair of DCCCD’s board of trustees, presented the proclamation and said, “Rep. Alonzo, we thank you for your support and your diligence on behalf of our district and for all colleges and universities in Texas. We are fortunate to count you among the members of the Dallas delegation who represent us in Austin.”

The proclamation cited Alonzo’s friendship with and support for higher education and DCCCD; it also mentioned two recent statewide honors he received: the 2008 Meritorious Service Award from the Texas Association for Chicanos in Higher Education and the 2008 Champion of Higher Education Award from the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce.

Alonzo has served four terms as a Texas State Representative for House District 104 in southwest Dallas. He made history as the first Mexican-American from North Texas elected to the Texas Legislature and as the first Hispanic elected president of the University of Texas at Austin’s Student Government Association. Alonzo also has a long track record of helping financially needy college students through legislation that provides scholarship monies for those students.
