North Lake Students Promote Day of Peace

For immediate release - Sept. 13, 2006

(IRVING, Texas) — Students in the North Lake College Phi Theta Kappa honor society, Alpha Zeta Eta chapter, are petitioning the Irving City Council to recognize Sept. 21 as the city’s official “Day of Peace.” To mark the occasion, the students are proposing that the city adopt the “Pinwheels for Peace” project.

“Pinwheels for Peace” started in Florida by two art teachers. Their students wrote what peace meant to them on the back of a pinwheel design, cut out the pinwheel and mounted it on a pencil for planting in the ground. On Sept. 21, the students planted the pinwheels in the school yard. The project caught on across Florida and other U.S. locations; the pinwheels represent the Day of Peace. Maegen Vogt, vice president of Alpha Zeta Eta, brought the project to the college.

North Lake provided pencils for the Irving Independent School District to be used for the pinwheel project. The city of Coppell has also been approached to participate. The college will have a ceremony on Sept. 21 at 12:30 where pinwheels made by North Lake students will be placed around the campus. The public is invited.

North Lake College is a member of the Dallas County Community College District. Educational opportunities are offered by the Dallas County Community College District without regard to race, color, age, national origin, religion, sex or sexual orientation.
