North Lake College Basketball Team Wins National Title - March 18, 2006
March 18, 2006

(IRVING, TEXAS) — The North Lake College men’s basketball team defeated Gloucester County College (NJ) on March 18 to win the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCCA) Division III championship. The national tournament was held in Delhi, New York, from March 16 to 18. There were eight teams from seven states represented in the tournament.

This is the second trip to the NJCCA tournament for the Blazers and the first win. In 2000, the Blazers won two out of three games and finished 4th in the tournament. Coach Tim McGraw was named All Tournament Coach and player Chris Aqwumaro was named Most Valuable Player.

A dunk by Chris Aqwumaro started the championship game off as the North Lake Blazers dominated Gloucester County College with a final score of 78-65. With high intensity, the Blazers took a lead late in the first half and never looked back. High scorer was Chris Aqwumaro with 18 points.

Chris Agwumaro, a 6-foot-5-inch forward from Mesquite, and Lorenzo Anthony, a 6-foot-2-inch guard from San Antonio, were two of the team’s six returning players from last season. The Blazers won the Metro Athletic Conference Championship in Dallas last year.

"It was exciting to see the players win this national recognition" says Dan Joutras, North Lake’s Athletic Director. Joutras gives credit to his basketball coach, Tim McGraw. "It was his strategies, and his team. He deserves the credit."

Coach McGraw said, "we won because our bench play was so much better than any of the other teams. We were truly a team to the fullest extent of the word. I am so happy for these guys because they overcame so much adversity to become national champions."
