Newsbrief

(DALLAS) — The Dallas County Community College District has received several state grants that support nursing, student recruitment and workforce development. Grant details are provided below.

  • The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has awarded DCCCD and El Centro College a $170,305 grant to support the Nursing Shortage Reduction Program. This grant provides funds to state public and private nursing programs that show an increase in the total number of nursing graduates at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree levels from academic years 2006 to 2007. The funding
period began in October 2007 and concludes Aug. 31, 2008.

  • Sul Ross State University has awarded DCCCD a grant in the amount of $103,720 for the Texas Prefreshman Engineering Program (TexPREP) Collaboration initiative. The amount will be split evenly between El Centro and Richland colleges; both institutions will use funds for TexPREP. The program is a collaborative effort among the state’s colleges and universities that encourages student achievers in middle schools and high schools to begin preparing early for science and engineering career paths. TexPREP is based at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Funding began in July 2007 and ends July 15, 2010.

  • The Texas Workforce Commission awarded DCCCD and the El Centro College Bill J. Priest Campus a grant in the amount of $492,522 for a Skills Development Fund program in partnership with Frito-Lay Inc. The grant provides training to both new and current employees in the areas of process improvement, supply chain management and various leadership and management topics. The funding period is Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2008.
