April 2007

(Mesquite, Texas) - The National Science Foundation STEP (Science Talent Expansion Program) and the CSEMS (Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics) Grant Programs at Eastfield College are proud to announce their 2007 scholars.

The following nine students were chosen as CSEMS scholars: Saundra Beckley, Samonia Baker and Hunter Lehrman of Mesquite; Benny Nash of Garland; Andrew White of Rockwall; Ronald Smith Jr. of Rowlett; Charlie Smith of Balch Springs; Jerremy Overholtzer of Kemp; and Fernando Ramirez of Dallas. The following are the STEP Scholars: Stephanie Boyd of Crandall; Scott Stephan, Mariano Coleman, Mirna Ventura and Daniel Price of Mesquite; Blair Bevier and Sara Hays of Rockwall; Matt Parkerson of Dallas; Funmi Afolayan of Garland; Donna Jackson of Quinlan; and Brian Goad of Rowlett.

Both programs are funded by the National Science Foundation and the selected students are eligible to receive up to $6,000 in scholarship money over a two year period.  While in the program the scholars have to maintain an excellent GPA and demonstrate progress towards graduation. Students support services such as supplemental instruction are available to the students in order to ensure their success.

In order to qualify for our National Science Foundation Scholarship Programs at Eastfield College a student needs to be working on an eligible degree program, be an Eastfield full time student and have a required GPA.

The selection of the scholars is based on the students’ personal statement, faculty letters of recommendation, grade point average and official transcripts information.
