Eastfield Sophomore Names to All -USA Academic Team

April 2007

(Mesquite, Texas) - Eastfield College sophomore Sara Hays has been named to the All-USA Academic Third Team, which is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, USA TODAY and the Association of American Community Colleges. Hays was selected from 1600 nominees.

Hays, also the president of Psi Eta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, is the fourth Eastfield College student in the history of the college to be named to the All-USA team. She will graduate from Eastfield this May with an Associate in Science and has been accepted to the nursing program at Baylor University.

Hays will receive a specially designed and personalized medallion; she was also named to the All-State First Academic Team and received a $400 scholarship.

The All-USA Academic Team program annually recognizes 60 outstanding two-year college students. First, Second, and Third Teams, each consisting of 20 members, are selected. The 20 First Team members receive stipends of $2,500 each. Selection is based on nominations submitted by community college presidents or CEOs, who receive nomination materials in the fall. To be eligible, a student must post a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA and be eligible to graduate with an associate degree.

While attending the Sigma Kappa Delta International Conference this past March, Hays was awarded an Academic and Service Scholarship for $350. It was based on academics, service to campus, chapter and community and required two letters of recommendation.

Hays is also involved in many organizations on the Eastfield campus including Sigma Kappa Delta (English Honor Society), Human Services Honor Society, and the Science Club.
In the local community she is active on the American Diabetes Association Camp committee and American Cancer Society Relay for Life committee.

The Rockwall resident is the daughter of Stan and Susan Hays.
