DCCCD Announces Teacher Prep Degree Plan Changes

For immediate release — May 15, 2009

Notice to Students

(DALLAS) — All students in Dallas County Community College District’s Teacher Preparation Program who recently finished or who currently are enrolled in several Texas Early Childhood Articulation (TECA) courses for their Associate of Arts in Teaching degree should talk to an advisor immediately about a new change in their degree plan that has been approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Joyce Williams, district director of workforce education — which includes teacher preparation programs — said in a recent announcement: “Under the previous A.A.T. EC-4 specialization degree, TECA courses 1303, 1311, 1318 and 1354 at DCCCD were considered required courses. Those four courses now have been removed from all A.A.T. plans, effective immediately, based on instructions from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.”

As a result, DCCCD students who currently are pursuing the A.A.T. degree (or recently completed it) and who have taken these courses will need to talk to their advisors now about: 1) transfer options to universities; and 2) the conversion of their degree plan to the new A.A.T. EC sixth-grade degree plan.

Williams added, “Please act now. Students who are pursuing degrees in teacher preparation should see their advisors immediately concerning these changes.”

For more information, contact the Teacher Preparation Department at any DCCCD college: Brookhaven, (972) 860-4144; Cedar Valley, (972) 860-8255; Eastfield, (972) 860-7356; El Centro, (214) 860-2485; Mountain View, (214) 860-8562; North Lake, (972) 273-3480; and Richland, (972) 238-6917.
