The Brookhaven College Head Start Center is temporarily closed from Wednesday, April 30, through Tuesday, May 5. The action was taken by Head Start officials as a precaution after learning that the sibling of one of the youngsters who attends the center was diagnosed with Type A influenza; swine flu has not been confirmed.

All students in Dallas County Community College District’s Teacher Preparation Program who recently finished or who currently are enrolled in several Texas Early Childhood Articulation (TECA) courses for their Associate of Arts in Teaching degree should talk to an advisor immediately about a new change in their degree plan that has been approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Hundreds of Dallas County Community College District students are crossing the stage during commencement ceremonies that begin on Sunday, May 3, and conclude by mid-month.

Two former Dallas County Community College District administrators — Dr. J. William Wenrich and Dr. Walter Bumphus — have been honored with the 2009 National Leadership Award from the American Association of Community Colleges.

The Dallas County Community College District has announced that it recently signed an agreement with Higher One, a financial services and payment company focused exclusively on higher education, to distribute refunds to more than 64,000 credit students enrolled at the district’s seven institutions.

DCCCD has signed a new transfer agreement with Millsaps College and has renewed its agreement with Western Governors University. Also: The new Cedar Valley College Science/Veterinary Technology/Allied Health Building recently won an “Outstanding Design” award from American School and University Magazine.

DCCCD’s 10th annual African American Read-In — which celebrates literacy among people of all ages and shares the writings of African-American authors — will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas.

DCCCD invites high school juniors and seniors and their parents to attend the Las Llaves del Exito (Keys to Success) College Fair for Families.

Dr. Wright Lassiter Jr., chancellor of the Dallas County Community College District, has been appointed serve as a member of the Association of Community College Trustees advisory committee of presidents. Also: Discover Life in America has named Dr. Carl Knight, professor of anatomy and physiology at Eastfield College, as its “Outstanding Biodiversity Educator of the Year 2008,” based on his exceptional work with the Thicket of Diversity.

Clyde Porter, associate vice chancellor of facilities for the Dallas County Community College District, has been honored with the American Institute of Architects’ prestigious 2009 Whitney M. Young Jr. Award.

Families and friends celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Dallas County Community College District’s citywide African American Read-In on Saturday, Jan. 31. Read-in founder and organizer Carla Ranger challenges individuals, families and communities to join the read-in chain during Black History Month.
