Hundreds of Dallas County Community College District students are crossing the stage during commencement ceremonies that began May 2 and conclude this week.

The Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services, the Dallas County Community College District, the Dallas Independent School District and Dallas Metrocare Services will sponsor a "Transitional Services and Job Fair" for high school students with disabilities (ages 16 to 22) on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Each year, the Cecil Wallace Fordham Award in Visual Arts, the Alice Jones Berding Award in Music and the Eleanor Jones Award in Creative Writing are given to students through DCCCD’s seven colleges who excel in art, music and creative writing. Fifteen students have been recognized for their talent and skills by the DCCCD Foundation with cash awards for 2008.

Sixteen students from the Dallas County Community College District have been chosen to participate in NASA’s Community College Aerospace Scholars program in April.

Three DCCCD students recently took their diverse stories to the steps of the nation’s capital as participants in the National Legislative Summit, sponsored by the Association of Community College Trustees.

The Eastfield College Pleasant Grove Campus at 802 S. Buckner Blvd. in Dallas represents access to higher education where it hasn’t been before — in the neighborhood, close to home.

Interested students now can apply for the 2008 Dr. Wright Lassiter Jr. BKM Scholarship, which is worth $2,500 for the academic year and covers tuition and books.

In honor of Women’s History Month, the Eastfield College business and fine arts division will sponsor a panel discussion with women from across the Dallas area who are featured in the book “Chicanas In Charge: Texas Women in the Public Arena.” The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Monday, March 3, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. in room 100 of the EFC Science Building.

A celebration of literature for children by African-American authors continues this year with the 2008 Dallas County Community College District’s citywide African American Read-In, featuring award-winning author and illustrator Ashley Bryan.

The new center is the highlight of grand opening ceremonies on Thursday, May 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. The event also will include a reception for the college's new president, Dr. Paul McCarthy, who began his tenure in February.

The Dallas County Community College District will provide a fact-filled and useful day of information to students and their parents through the Las Llaves del Exito (Keys to Success) program on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008.

Members of the Dallas County Community College District board of trustees unanimously approved a proclamation during their regular April meeting that honored state Rep. Roberto Alonzo for his work on behalf of higher education and DCCCD.

DCCCD Island, a location in virtual space, opened educational opportunities to DCCCD students with a virtual groundbreaking.

Seven DCCCD students have been recognized for their efforts in the classroom and in the community as recipients of the 2008 Max and Rosa Goldblatt Endowment Awards in Community Service.
