DCCC Schools Celebrate Constitution Day

For immediate release - Sept. 12, 2005

(DALLAS) – Each of the Dallas County Community Colleges will celebrate Constitution Day during September with a number of programs and activities; see the list below for highlights:

Brookhaven College – Sept. 22, 2005

  • Speaker: Keven Ann Willey, vice president/editorial page editor, "Dallas Morning News," will discuss “The Bill of Rights,” 9 a.m., room 234, K Building. Free.
  • Constitution Celebration: free booklets about the Constitution for students, faculty and staff, plus a short program and refreshments, in the lobby of the Student Services Center, 1 to 1:30 p.m. Free.
  • Service learning dialogue session on “Freedom of Speech” from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., room S204 (Student Services Center). Free.
  • Constitution information, Learning Resource Center display case.

Cedar Valley College – Sept. 19, 2005

  • Presentation on the Constitution by David McCoy, CVC government faculty, at noon in the CVC courtyard; members of academic honorary Phi Theta Kappa will have giveaways and refreshments to earn hallmark points for their organization. Free.

Eastfield College – Sept. 15, 2005

  • A seminar titled “The U.S. Constitution: A Masterpiece” begins at 11 a.m. in room 101 of the Science Building; the event is coordinated by SPAR (Student Programs and Resources) and EFC government faculty. Free

El Centro College – Sept. 19-20, 2005

  • Sept. 19 – “Constitution Jeopardy”: competitive games for students involving questions about the Constitution and the branches of the U.S. government, 11 a.m., Student Center; prizes. Free.
  • Sept. 19 – Movies, A/V lounge: “Amistad” at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and “The Long Walk Home” at 1 p.m. Free.
  • Sept. 20 – Panel discussion on “The Three Branches of U.S. Government: Separation of Power, Checks and Balances,” 11:15 a.m., Performance Hall. Free.
  • Sept. 20 – Refreshments and hot dogs served at noon, Student Center.

Mountain View College – Sept. 21, 2005

  • SPAR will host a U.S. Constitution Day program featuring Texas Rep. Terri Hodge, who will discuss “How the Constitution Impacts Your Legacy” in room W38 at 11 a.m. Free. SPAR also will share miniature copies of the U.S. Constitution, and the MVC Library has assembled a related book display.

North Lake College – Sept. 14, 2005

  • Program titled “A Celebration of Citizenship,” 12:30 p.m. Free.

Richland College – Sept. 15, 2005

  • Constitution Observance Day will feature the winners of our essay-writing contest and a presentation from a local federal judge addressing “Why the Constitution Is Important in 21st-Century America,” followed by a reception. Essay prizes: 1st place – $500 Richland scholarship; 2nd place – $200 in cash; and 3rd place – $100 in cash.  The program will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. in the Performance Hall.
