(Dallas) - Be a tekkie! Better yet…be a part of the solution in the high tech work force, earn more money and start a career by attending a special program presented by the Dallas County Community College District. High school students from Dallas County and surrounding areas are invited to DCCCD's free "High Tech Expo" on Sat., Feb. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Richland College in Sabine Hall.
The program is designed to be hands on. Students will learn about problem solving, technology and high tech careers as they work in three types of laboratories: semiconductor, computer-aided design (CADD) or electronics technology. Richland's engineering technology faculty members will work with students as they use technology and equipment for projects "…to get a sense of what working in a high tech career is really like," said Dawn Jenkins, DCCCD program specialist in the district's Tech Prep program. "We also will have an industry browsing area where participants can talk to representatives from area high tech businesses about the latest technologies and careers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area." Teachers and parents are invited as well.
While the evening program will feature fun, food and hands-on learning experiences, the event also includes opportunities to learn more about DCCCD scholarships, financial aid and the Rising Star program. Participants can win door prizes, too!
Representatives from the following high tech industries, plus area colleges and universities, also will be available to talk to students and answer their questions: Micron Technology; Principal Technology Engineering; Texas Instruments; DFW Semiconductor Executive Council; DRS Infrared; the University of North Texas; the University of Texas at Arlington; Eastfield College; and Mountain View College.
The DCCCD High Tech Expo is presented by the district's Tech Prep program, which enables high school students to earn community college credit while they are still in high school. Those credits can be applied toward technology programs throughout DCCCD. DCCCD coordinates its program with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Texas Education Agency.
