DCCCD Faculty and Administrators Honored

For immediate release — April 17, 2001

(DALLAS) — The eyes of Texas were upon the Dallas County Community College District during a special day when DCCCD honored a select group of faculty members and administrators who distinguished themselves in the classroom and on the job this year. Tagged “Denim and Diamonds,” the program included an awards presentation, as well as a number of sessions and topics about retirement, student recruitment, enrollment, retention, technology in teaching and more (line dancing, too!).

The program highlighted these award presentations:

  • Minnie Stevens Piper Professor/Miles Production Company Outstanding Faculty Award — Glenn C. Currier, professor of arts and sciences, El Centro College. Currier received a framed certificate and a $500 check from the chancellor’s fund.

Nominees for the award included Currier; Sue Hudson Cross of Brookhaven College; Tommy Thompson of Cedar Valley College; Mary L. Forrest of Eastfield College; E. Wayne Cook of Mountain View College; Jerry Mayfield of North Lake College; and Bill Neal of Richland College.

Farrell, North Lake College; and Karen Forbes, Richland College.

  • Retiree Hall of Honor Faculty Award — Elaine Sullivan of Richland College was recognized for her service and continuing involvement with the district and its students.

Nominees included Sullivan; Patti Bradshaw, Eastfield College; and Gladys Leff, El Centro College.

  • Jean Sharon Griffith Student Development Leadership Award— Freddy Rodriguez, El Centro College received the honor for his work with students and their academic and personal growth.

Nominees were Rodriguez; Michael Henderson, Bill J. Priest Institute; Joy Arndt, Brookhaven College; Carolyn Ward and Tommy Thompson, Cedar Valley College; the entire Advisement Center staff at Eastfield College; Ann Fletcher, Mountain View College; Guy Melton, North Lake College; and Larry Polk, Richland College.

  • Innovation of the Year Award – Huan Luong, vice president for business services at the Bill J. Priest Institute for Economic Development, was honored for his work on the project “Cost Center Manager Approach to Fiscal Soundness.”

Other projects nominated and staffed by district teams included “Summer Medical Career Academy” at Brookhaven College; “Critical Thinking/Technology Project” at Cedar Valley College; “DCCCD Board Agenda on the Intranet” at the district’s downtown office; “Retrieval Process for DCCCD Contracts” at the District Service Center; “Home School Connection” at Eastfield College; “The CISCO Networking Academy Team” at El Centro College; “Information Technology Strategic Plan” at the R. Jan. LeCroy Center; “Development and Implementation of an Electronic Commerce Program” at Mountain View College; “College Resource and Instructor Support Program” at North Lake College; and “Chip Camp 2000” at Richland College.

  • Retiree Hall of Honor Administrator Award – Carole Shlipak, former executive director of the DCCCD Foundation. Ken Lester from the District Service Center also was nominated for this honor.

  • Retiree Hall of Honor Professional Support Staff Award – This award is given during a separate conference day of activities for professional support staff throughout DCCCD. The nominees for this honor were Judith Burgamy of Mountain View College and Margaret Webb Adams of the District Service Center.

DCCCD Chancellor William Wenrich thanked faculty and administrators for their service — especially to students — throughout the year. He also provided an update of activities within the district and shared the stage with Dr. Rodger Pool, president of Eastfield College. Students and faculty from the Eastfield College music department entertained the group with a piano performance comprising three selections; a guitar performance of four works; and a jazz performance featuring the Eastfield College Jazz Combo.
