DCCCD Celebrates Constitution Day

For immediate release — Sept. 14, 2009 

(DALLAS) — The Dallas County Community College District will celebrate Constitution Day in September with programs, giveaways and entertainment on its college campuses. Lectures and panel discussions about the U.S. Constitution are some of the activities planned.

A list of colleges detailing their Constitution Day activities is provided below, by date:

Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009 — Eastfield College, Cedar Valley College, North Lake College

  • 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. — Eastfield College faculty members will discuss state and federal constitution issues in room 135, Building C. Glynn Newman will talk about “The Texas Constitution,” Jerry Henson-Lincoln will address “Emancipation and the Constitution” and Phoenix Rousseau will discuss “The U.S. Constitution.” The event is free and open to the public. EFC is located at 3737 Motley Drive in Mesquite.

  • 12:30 p.m. — Cedar Valley College will hold Constitution Day activities for faculty, staff, students and administrators in the courtyard; the event is presented by the CVC Office of Student Life. Cedar Valley is located at 3030 N. Dallas Ave. in Lancaster.

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — The main campus of North Lake College, located at 5001 N. MacArthur Blvd. in Irving, will observe the day by handing out booklets featuring the U.S. Constitution and also will show a related documentary. Refreshments will be provided by the NLC Student Life Center.

Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009 — Brookhaven College, North Lake College

  • Noon — Brookhaven College will present a panel discussion and dialogue about the U.S. Constitution featuring several key speakers: Drs. Michael Lusztig and Hiroki Takeuchi, Southern Methodist University; and Dr. John Ishiyama, the University of North Texas. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in room 234 of the K Building on BHC’s campus, located at 3939 Valley View Lane in Farmers Branch/Dallas. Copies of U.S. Constitution booklets will be distributed at the event.

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — The south campus of North Lake College, located at 1081 W. Shady Grove Road in Irving, will observe the day by handing out booklets featuring the U.S. Constitution and also will show a related documentary. Refreshments will be provided by the NLC Student Life Center.

Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009 — El Centro College, Mountain View College, North Lake College

  • 11 a.m. — El Centro College kicks off its 2009 celebration of Constitution Day, based on the theme “Justice for All”; the program will be presented in the performance hall. A panel discussion will feature speakers Lena LeVario, district court judge; Michele Moore, public defender; David McCoy, government faculty member from Cedar Valley College; and Charles Chapman, who spent more than 20 years in prison and was released after DNA evidence proved his innocence. These panelists will discuss the importance of protecting the rights of the accused; four of the U.S. Constitution’s first 10 amendments address these rights. A reception will be held after the event; music and cake will be provided. Deputy registrars also will be on hand in the student center to help citizens register to vote. El Centro is located at 801 Main St. in downtown Dallas.

  • 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. — Mountain View College faculty member Jonathan York, who teaches political science, will discuss the U.S. Constitution during a free presentation in room W38; the college also will distribute free copies of the U.S. Constitution. Mountain View College is located at 4849 W. Illinois Ave. in Dallas.

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — The north campus of North Lake College, located at 101 S. Royal Lane in Coppell, will observe the day by handing out booklets featuring the U.S. Constitution and also will show a related documentary. Refreshments will be provided by the NLC Student Life Center.
