(DALLAS) — Dr. Andrew Jones, Dallas County Community College District executive vice chancellor for educational affairs, has accepted the position of chancellor for the Coast Community College District in Orange County, Calif. His appointment was approved by CCCD trustees, and Jones joins the multicampus system this summer.
A senior college administrator for more than 30 years, Jones previously served as president of the Community College of Baltimore County (Catonsville, Md.). His academic, student and community orientation evolved from his previous roles as a director of special services, associate professor of adult and continuing education, an assistant to the president, Title I director, dean, vice president for academic and student affairs, provost/professor of education and his current position in DCCCD’s system. His responsibilities at DCCCD include academic affairs, student affairs, compliance, workforce development/education, distance education, and articulation and transfer.
“I am humbled by overwhelming expressions of support from my current Dallas County Community College District family,” said Jones. “DCCCD has afforded so many people the opportunity to salvage their dreams and transform their lives; I am but one of many (people) who have helped our students. The district has the rich combination of human and capital resources that allows significant intellectual and emotional maturity with students, staff and executive leadership. Clearly, I have benefitted from these resources and will take a combination of skills, confidence and knowledge that I will use in service to Coast Community College District.”
Dr. Wright Lassiter Jr., DCCCD’s chancellor, said, “I am pleased to share the news that Dr. Andrew Jones will serve as the incoming chancellor of the Coast Community College District in Orange County, Calif., which provides more than 60,000 students with educational opportunities at three campuses within the system. We congratulate Dr. Jones for his years of dedicated service to DCCCD. We know that he will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to lead CCCD forward in many future initiatives.”
Jones has spent most of his academic career serving four-year colleges and universities; however, during the last 15 years, he has been an advocate for equal access and student success at the community college level, where students can earn an associate degree, professional certificate or similar credentials. He also has led several recent initiatives: addressing the declining role of minority males in higher education, increasing faculty diversity and promoting student success through the use of technology and process improvement.
He added, “The combination of experiences, skills and intellectual growth that I experienced at DCCCD positions me to provide inspired leadership at CCCD during a time of major change. CCCD’s 2020 Vision plan provides insightful direction for the district’s development over the next several years and serves as the blueprint for substantive change and progress. I hope — with the support of the board, faculty, staff and executive team — to be the architect of this adventure and to help establish the district as a runway for innovation, creativity and stability.”
The new CCCD chancellor earned his doctorate in education and public policy from Temple University, holds a master’s degree in information sciences and had undergraduate preparation in economics at the University of Maryland. Married to Dr. Savannah Jones for 36 years, he is the father of Dana and Kyle and grandfather of Savannah, Quentin, Zora and Preston.
