New Community Garden Is an Oasis in a ‘Food Desert’

(DALLAS) — A new, 40-bed organic garden at Mountain View College — its Slow Food Community Garden — will be an oasis in a food desert, serving as a place where area residents, the college’s students and its employees can plant their own food and cultivate learning at the same time.
Mountain View College hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony today to launch the new Slow Food Community Garden. It is the first component of “Living Labs” at Mountain View College and will serve as “an outdoor learning space, a neighborhood teaching opportunity and a place for students to gain hands-on experience in multiple disciplines,” said Lori De La Cruz, Mountain View’s sustainability coordinator. The college is located at 4849 W. Illinois Ave. in Dallas.

Twenty-four of the gardens 40 raised beds are available for lease by the public.
The Slow Food Community Garden is the first garden in the Dallas County Community College District that offers garden beds for annual lease to the public. The garden provides a much-needed opportunity for residents who lack access to fresh, affordable foods for miles around. Twenty-four of the garden’s beds are available to the community; the others will be used for student learning and by faculty and staff. The community garden is located on the west side of the college, northwest of the S Building; easiest access is on Duncanville Road.
The Mountain View College Slow Community Food Garden was funded in part by the Wells Fargo Environmental Solutions for Communities grant program. The college was one of two Dallas-Fort Worth environmental nonprofits that received funds totaling $78,824 from the program, which supports projects that are focused on land and water conservation, energy efficiency infrastructure and educational outreach in communities across America.
