(DALLAS) — Members of the Dallas County Community College District's board of trustees gave their final approval to hire Dr. Jesus "Jess" Carreon as DCCCD's fifth chancellor during the group's regular monthly meeting on Tues., June 3. The nomination was approved unanimously during a public vote by board members following a 21-day waiting period.
Carreon, DCCCD's first minority chancellor, will fill the position vacated by Dr. William Wenrich, who retires on Aug. 31 after almost 13 years with the district. Carreon has served as president of Portland (Ore.) Community College since 2001; PCC is a three-campus system that serves more than 45,000 students and also offers continuing education and workforce education programs through several centers.
During that same meeting, the DCCCD board of trustees honored Wenrich by giving him the title of chancellor emeritus. Trustee Kitty Boyle thanked the retiring chancellor for his years of service and dedication to the district.
Board members also elected Jerry Prater, District 3 representative for DCCCD (Garland/Mesquite areas), as chairman following Boyle's resignation from that position. Pattie Powell, who represents District 1 (the Richardson area), was elected vice chairman of the DCCCD board of trustees. Prater thanked Boyle for her service as chair, particularly during the national search for a new chancellor.
The July 2003 board meeting was moved from the first Tuesday of the month to the second Tuesday, July 8, at 4 p.m.
