Session 19:30-10:15 a.m.: Balancing Mind, Body, Heart and Art: Inspiration and PracticeKarin Oen
This session will explore traditions of Asian art including Tibetan sand mandalas, Indian sculpture, and Chinese jade, along with the wellness practices of meditation, yoga and tai chi. Historical context and contemporary perspectives will provide inspiration for creating an intentional practice of care for one's body, mind and heart through art.
Karin Oen, director of education at the Crow Collection of Asian Art, is an art historian, museum educator and wellness instructor and practitioner who promotes the integration of art and wellness into the daily lives of individuals and communities. She earned her Ph.D. in the History, Theory and Criticism of Art from MIT in 2012 and holds a bachelor's from Stanford University and a master's from Christie’s Education New York. Prior to attending MIT, Karin was a museum educator for Asian art at the Peabody Essex Museum, where she worked on interpretation, programming, exhibitions, curriculum resources and outreach to Asian American communities in the Boston area.
Session 210:30-11:15 a.m.: The Integrative Medicine Approach: Combining Traditional and Holistic Methods to Achieve Good HealthClaudia Harsh
Learn how to combine ancient traditions such as acupuncture and ayurvedic techniques along with cutting edge Western medicine. Participants will understand that the combination of traditional and holistic methods along with their current medical paradigm will result in improved emotional, mental, physical and spiritual health. A cutting edge approach to insulin resistance and weight loss will also be described.
Dr. Claudia Harsh works as an integrative gynecologist and physician acupuncturist in Dallas. She is the author of the book Finding Grace and Balance in the Cycle of Life: Exploring Integrative Gynecology, published in 2010. Dr. Harsh is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist and owned a traditional ob-gyn practice for 14 years. She trained in medical acupuncture through UCLA. She then joined the Alliance Institute for Integrative Medicine in Cincinnati as the director of integrative gynecology and physician acupuncturist. In December 2010 she concluded the two-year fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. She uses nutrition coaching, breathwork, biofeedback, acupuncture, frequency-specific microcurrent and functional medicine testing to help her clinets address their emotional, mental, physical and spiritual health.

Scott Clemens is a founding member of NVC-DFW. He began studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in 2007, and in the coming months, he is scheduled to complete the Center for Nonviolent Communication certification program and become a CNVC Certified Trainer. He is an experienced mediator in both litigated and non-litigated cases, and offers training and conflict coaching. J Johnson has been studying, practicing and supporting the growth of Nonviolent Communication since 2004. Since 2010, he has completed four yearlong immersion programs in NVC mediation with leading international trainers. J has also studied directly with NVC founder Marshall Rosenberg. A founding member of NVC-DFW, J facilitates classes, workshops and practice groups in schools, spiritual communities, and wellness facilities. He also provides conflict coaching for individuals and mediations for couples and groups seeking compassionate resolution to conflict.
Session 42-2:45 p.m.: What Works? Art Works. And This Is HowKaren Blessen
Karen Blessen, the co-founder of 29 Pieces, will present on the MasterPEACE: Young Artists Making a Kinder World program. MasterPEACE is a hands-on, art-based curriculum. Teachers confirm that MasterPEACE teaches essential social values like kindness and compassion and important life skills such as problem solving, conflict resolution and analytical thinking. From 2008 to 2012 more than 3,000 students in 16 North Texas schools, from kindergarten to college age, were trained in MasterPEACE. 29 Pieces developed a 300-page MasterPEACE manual and a website dedicated to MasterPEACE education. We are now training teachers in 11 schools, museums and counseling centers across Dallas. The vision is to reach every student in Texas and beyond.
Karen Blessen is an award-winning freelance artist and writer who was the first graphic artist to be named a winner of the Pulitzer Prize. She has worked on varied projects, including art and design for the DART railway station and park at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas and acting as a confetti engineer during the millennium celebrations in Times Square in New York City. For Peace One Day, a children's book published by G.P. Putnam's Sons, Karen collaborated with Jeremy Gilley, founder of the September 21st celebration of the U.N. International Day of Peace. Karen is the co-founder of 29 Pieces, a Dallas organization that is about monumental change through monumental art. 29 Pieces uses art to awaken and uplift the creative human spirit to make genuine social change. Karen is also the program manager for : Young Artists Making a Kinder World, an in-school, hands-on program using art to teach about peacemaking and nonviolence.
